Bell kicks LTE speeds up for faster data downloads

04 Sep 2014

When the country’s three biggest wireless carriers launched LTE service several years ago, their initial download data speeds were nowhere near the technology’s potential high.

Slowly, however, as their network expanded and they were able to torque their infrastructure things have sped up.

On Tuesday Bell Mobility announced it has kicked its LTE network speeds up a notch, from 75 Megabits per second (with a user expected average 12-25 Mbps) to 110 Mbps (14-36 Mbps), with speed as high as 150 Mbps (18-40 Mbps real-world) available in some locations.

Subscribers need LTE-capable handsets to reach those speeds.

Bell Canada's Fibe TV footprint reaches 4.6M households, but cable competition narrows sub increase

04 Sep 2014

Bell Canada, an operating subsidiary of BCE Inc., reported that its Bell Fibe TV subscriber base totaled 580,643 at the end of the second quarter, up 67.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

Although its total IPTV subscriber base rose, the telco only added 46,533 net new customers in the second quarter compared to 50,555 last year. Bell's Fibe TV footprint passed more than 4.6 million households at the end of the second quarter, up from 3.8 million last year.

Bell said the decrease reflects "aggressive offers and service bundle promotions from cable competitors and less footprint expansion compared to the same quarter last year."

Bell Canada: The case for mental health training

01 Sep 2014

When it comes to tackling mental health issues, Bell Canada is one organization that’s putting its money where its mouth is. Its annual Let’s Talk campaign is aimed at reducing the stigma of mental health—and, since 2010, it has committed more than $67.5 million for mental health initiatives.

With respect to workplace mental health, Bell realized that it needed to lead by example. Moreover, there was a good business case for doing so: the Mental Health Commission of Canada estimates that 500,000 Canadians miss work due to some form of mental illness every week.

Lucie Dutil, vice-president, HR, with Bell Canada, describes the company’s initial pledge to better workplace health as a little daunting. “We realized that there were no workplace best practices in mental health. An important part of our work is to develop and integrate those best practices into Bell. We knew from Day 1 that was going to be a long-term investment and that change would take time. After two-and-a-half years, we can already see a big difference at Bell.”
